Welcome to Climate Literacy! This rigorous online course is designed for communicators, educators, and community leaders who want to deepen their understanding of the science behind climate change and evidence-based, equitable solutions needed to address it. Participants will explore how climate systems function, how human actions influence climate, and how climate influences people and other parts of the Earth system. The course combines scientific readings, engaging videos, interactive simulations, systems thinking activities, and data visualizations to support a rich learning experience. While it does not focus on teaching strategies, it provides a strong scientific foundation to support confident, informed engagement with climate education materials. In addition to global climate science, the course incorporates Colorado-based resources and data to ground concepts in real-world examples; while these materials are locally focused, they serve as valuable case studies that offer insights and applications relevant to participants from any region.
Objectives and Expectations
By the end of this course, you will be able to:- Explain how Earth’s climate system functions and analyze the relationships between human systems and Earth systems.
- Interpret and apply the Climate Literacy: Essential Principles for Understanding and Addressing Climate Change (2024) to evaluate real-world climate issues and solutions
- Develop, evaluate, and justify strategies for mitigating and adapting to climate change.
As a student of this course, it is expected that you:- Commit the time required to complete all readings, assignments, and assessments.
- Complete Modules 1-9 and their associated assignments.
- Submit the final course evaluation.
Prerequisites- Experience working in education is not required but highly encouraged.
- Experience using and sharing Google Docs.
- College level reading, writing, and critical thinking skills.
Required Materials- Laptop or desktop computer with internet access.
Completing Tasks and Assignments
Throughout the course, documents will be provided in the form of Google Docs. "Make a Copy" under the File menu to edit it as your own. If necessary, you can download it as a Word document, yet this is not preferred. Assignments should be submitted as Google Docs by using the file link-sharing feature. If you have questions or would prefer another option, please contact the course moderator before submitting your first assignment.
Grading and Optional Credit- Periodic assessments throughout each module must be completed with at least 80% accuracy or a score of 2 as indicated on the scoring guide provided.
- To receive a certificate of completion, you must complete all assignments and receive the scores as indicated above. You must also participate in the online discussion.
- 1 semester hour of CSM credit can be earned from the Adams State University for an additional $55. If you are interested in earning CSM credit, you will need to complete the course with a grade of 2 or more on all assignments and pay here at any point during the course term.
Important DatesThis course runs for 8 weeks, from June 1 - July 24, 2026. This is a completely asynchronous course. You may learn at your own pace. However, we strongly recommend that you spread out your work so that you aren’t rushed at the end. To help with that, we’ve set suggested deadlines for activities throughout the course. I will also be sending regular emails reminding you to keep up the great work!

My name is Sarah Johnson and I am thrilled to be moderating this Climate Literacy eeCourse. I designed wrote this course for CAEE and am really looking forward to sharing it with each of you. I have been focused on climate literacy education for educators for the past 5+ years focusing on the Colorado River Basin of the West, Canada and forests, and the Arctic Ocean and sea ice.
I run a small independent education gig, Wild Rose Education where I am busy designing, teaching, and facilitating innovative environmental education learning experiences at the national and sometimes international level. I have lived in western Colorado since 2004 and currently live in Basalt, Colorado.
A couple fun facts about me: I attended the UNFCCC COP26 (UN climate meeting) in Glasgow, Scotland in 2021, every year I grow a large vegetable garden, and I play a variety of musical instruments.
I'm looking forward to getting to know a bit about each of the students in this course and participate in this learning journey together.

Before You Begin
FIRST: Access the "Climate Literacy Course Journal".You need to ‘Make a Copy’ of this Google doc file for your own use (preferred), or if necessary download it as a Microsoft Word document (not preferred).
Click on File, then click ‘Make a Copy’ or ‘Download’. You will draft and write/draw your responses to assignment questions and prompts in your own Course Journal Google doc file throughout the entire course.
Note that ONLY tasks that require a response or submission are included in the Course Journal doc; you will need to access all the course materials and instructions in the course on the Moodle Learning Management System (LMS).
At the end of each module, you will submit your Course Journal with the relevant sections completed by either sharing your own Google Doc link or uploading your complete journal as a Word file. You will continue to submit your Google Doc weblink to each of the Moodle assignments (it will be the same web link each time). Assignments will not be accepted as PDF files.

Hand draw what you know today about how Earth’s climate system works.
TASK 2: As you watch Science of Climate Change (16:45)
- CREATE a hand drawn diagram or concept model that describes how the Earth’s climate system works. Be sure to start with the sun, a body of water, a section of land and then add many more components that address the Earth Systems including the biosphere, hydrosphere, and atmosphere (if you need support, review My NASA DATA: About Earth Systems Background Information or view pdf). Be sure to link connections, causes and effects, and the many interconnections in your diagram with symbols (e.g. arrows) and label its parts. Throughout this course you will be adding to and editing this diagram as you work through the modules.
Scan or take a photo of your diagram and insert it into your Course Journal under Module 1.

Explore Climate Literacy and Education Frameworks
Explore information that is deemed important for individuals and communities to know and understand about Earth’s climate, impacts of climate change, and approaches to adaptation or mitigation; and energy essential principles and foundational concepts for energy education.

Weather vs. Climate
What is the difference between weather and climate? Climate is not the same thing as weather. Weather is the minute-by-minute condition of the atmosphere (such as temperature and precipitation) on a local scale. Climate is the long-term average weather conditions of an area. The term climate change refers to significant and persistent change in an area’s average climate conditions or their extremes.

Retrieve your Earth’s climate system diagram from Module 1 of this course. Integrate the new learning from the above resources into your diagram by hand DRAWING the parts. Feel free to add to or completely start over. Be sure to include factors that affect climate change: forcings, feedbacks, and tipping points. Be sure to include the cause-and-effect, interconnected relationships, and movement of energy using arrows, symbols, and labels.
Then, using the audio recorder on your smartphone or computer, RECORD yourself while you describe and explain your diagram in 2-5 minutes. - Develop a scenario. Use En-ROADS to develop your vision of limiting global warming to less than 2°C (3.6°F).
- Save your scenario link: Click on "Share Your Scenario" in the upper right-hand corner of En-ROADS, then choose "Copy Scenario Link."
- SHARE the link in the Course Journal.
After developing your preferred scenario, WRITE a concise response addressing these questions in less than 350 words:- Your Plan: What are the top 3-5 most important policies in your strategy? TASK 14: Use The Climate Explorer to identify what matters to your community, how climate change could affect it, and how to plan for resilience.- Type in your city, state
- Explore the data dashboard
- Click on the ‘Ready to plan for resilience?’ box. Explore the specific concerns for your area. Then explore another region of the country (perhaps a place where you have friends of family living) using the same steps above. Are there any ‘at risk neighborhoods’ identified? If so, do they correlate with other ‘at risk’ concerns in those neighborhoods?
In 200-300 words DESCRIBE what the top climate concerns are and how you and those you love and care about experience (or could experience) these concerns first hand. What actions are suggested for these people to be able to plan for resilience?

TASK 18: Consider how you can apply what you have learned from this course to your communications, outreach, and/or teaching practice.DRAFT a simple outline/summary (only 1 page) of a lesson, interpretive program, communication, or any other type of outreach activity (‘the activity’) that includes a focus on climate and that you actually may use with one of your real-world audiences. Choose one topic (or more) from this course that you want to dig deeper into and center more explicitly in your activity. Demonstrate in your outline how you will integrate the climate literacy topic(s) into your activity. Be sure to call out the specific climate literacy essential principle(s) that is being integrated and centered in the activity. Name any specific resources you plan to use along with any additional people you may need to consult with to ensure the activity represents local solutions, expertise, and perspectives. Be sure to include a title, approximate amount of time needed, audience description in the outline along with the content and activities.
Draft a personal reflection on your process of learning throughout this course.TASK 19: WRITE a short reflection piece (400-600 words) that addresses the following questions:
