  • Course Overview

    Welcome to CEG101: Introduction to Community Engagement! This course is designed to introduce you to and provide a broad overview of NAAEE’s Guidelines for Excellence: Community Engagement. This set of guidelines focuses on community wellness and is designed to help environmental educators create inclusive environments that support effective partnerships and collaborations. 

    Please note that this course is NOT a requirement of the Green Community Leader eeCredential. If you are interested in a more in-depth experience with the NAAEE’s Guidelines for Excellence: Community Engagement, consider joining the next cohort of Green Community Leaders in August, beginning with CEG210.

  • In this module, participants will become oriented to the NAAEE National Project for Excellence in Environmental Education, and the purpose behind the Community Engagement Guidelines for Excellence.

    • State the purpose of the Community Engagement Guidelines for Excellence
    • Explain the structure of the Community Engagement Guidelines for Excellence
    • Describe the resources available in the Guidelines.

  • This module is designed to help you define “community" and begin to think about the needs of your community.


    Objectives

    After completing this module, you should be able to:
    • Define community.
    • Identify both an environmental need and a social or economic need found in your community.
    • Describe how environmental education efforts can address needs and connect to community well-being.

  • This module will introduce you to the five key characteristics of the Community Engagement Guidelines and help you evaluate your skills and knowledge related to each. You will also explore additional important components of the guidelines.

    Objectives

    After completing this module, you should be able to:
    • Explain each of the five Key Characteristics included in the Community Engagement Guidelines for Excellence.
    • Provide examples of each of the five Key Characteristics.
    • List and explain the purpose of the other three components of the Guidelines.
    • Use selected Resources in the Guidelines to react to a community engagement case study scenario.

  • This module will help you assess what you’ve learned about community engagement and environmental education and determine what next steps might be to move forward. It is designed to integrate various tasks from the preceding Modules.

    Objectives

    After completing this module, you should be able to:
    • Re-evaluate your knowledge and skills in applying the Community Engagement Guidelines for Excellence.
    • Develop a plan to increase this knowledge and skill.
