In this module, participants will become oriented to the NAAEE National Project for Excellence in Environmental Education, and the purpose behind the Community Engagement Guidelines for Excellence.
Objectives

- State the purpose of the Community Engagement Guidelines for Excellence
- Explain the structure of the Community Engagement Guidelines for Excellence
- Describe the resources available in the Guidelines.

TASK 1: Complete all sections of the NAAEE Community Engagement Self-Assessment. This will help you determine what skills and knowledge you have related to Community Engagement before beginning this course. You will receive a copy of your responses to the self-assessment via email. Copy and paste the results into your Course Journal. Then answer the following questions found in your Course Journal.

TASK 2: Download your free copy of NAAEE’s Community Engagement: Guidelines for Excellence. You will use this publication throughout the course.

TASK 3: Make a list of 4-7 preliminary questions you have about engaging your community in environmental education as well as questions about the NAAEE’s Community Engagement Guidelines in your Course Journal.

TASK 4: Next, you will view a webinar introducing the NAAEE Guidelines for Excellence (see notes below before viewing) and STOP at the Drilling Down segment, approximately minute 24. As you watch the webinar, make notes on the following topics in your Course Journal.
- What is the NAAEE National Project for Excellence?
- How were the Community Engagement Guidelines were developed?
- What is the focus of these Guidelines?
- How are these Guidelines structured?
Then, in your journal, answer the following: Given your limited knowledge, how can you imagine using these Guidelines?

- Remember this was a webinar that was viewed and presented “live” at one point.
- There will be a brief discussion on how to use Zoom which of course, does not apply to you.
- Several times, there will be a pause for questions. These questions are not relevant to this module.

TASK 5: Now, review your notes from the webinar and then, go over your preliminary questions from Task 3 and answer as many as possible. You will continue to answer your questions throughout this course.
